Class Dismissal and Cancellation
Classes at Blinn College may be dismissed for inclement weather, national disaster, or other unavoidable circumstances. If classes are in session when such a situation arises, the division chair, upon receiving authorization from the appropriate vice president, will notify the instructors and students of class cancellations. Should these extraordinary situations occur prior to the beginning of an instructional day, the decision to suspend classes is typically made between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. for day classes and by 3:00 p.m. for evening classes.
Notification is made through area radio and television stations as well as the college Web site.

If classes are suspended, faculty members are not required to report to their
respective campus, but are considered to be on call and available. If classes
are not suspended but a faculty member is unable to reach his/her teaching
assignment due to inclement weather, the instructor should immediately advise
his/her supervisor or appropriate dean. Faculty members do not have the authority
to cancel classes. The decision to cancel classes must be made with the approval
of the appropriate division chair and authorization from the Vice President
of Academic Affairs and/or the President.
Class Make-Up:
1. In the event classes are dismissed, the instructor will
be responsible for notifying her/his students how the missed class time
will be redeemed.
2. Information concerning make-up work will be given to students within
one week following the cancelled class period(s).
Blinn College Police
The Blinn College Police Department has the major
responsibility for the safety and well being of the students, faculty and
staff members of the
college. Department personnel are sensitive to the special nature of
a college campus and especially students, who are generally young and
on their own for the first time.
BCPD officers have authority over any property owned, leased, rented
or otherwise under the control of Blinn College. The well-trained officers
patrol throughout the campuses and investigate all criminal incidents on
campus. BCPD officers have complete authority to apprehend and arrest anyone
involved in illegal acts on campus and areas immediately adjacent to the
campuses. If a Blinn student commits offenses involving Blinn College Rules
and Regulations, BCPD will refer the individual to the Disciplinary Division
of Student Services.
The department offers these additional services:
•
Nighttime escorts
•
Response to a network of fire, smoke and intrusion alarms
•
Response to medical emergencies
The BCPD cooperates with other law enforcement and emergency response
agencies at the city, county, state and federal levels. This includes
coordination
of special events and a mutual assistance program.
Medical Emergencies
In the case of severe bleeding, breathing problems, or chest pains, call 911 or campus police at the numbers listed above. For other medical emergencies, contact campus police first.
Severe Weather/Outdoor Hazards
In cases of sudden severe weather or other dangerous conditions outdoors, students, faculty and staff will be directed to shelter-in-place inside the buildings. Do not go outside or move to another building. Do not use elevators.
Evacuation due to fire or other emergency
Upon hearing a continuous alarm or verbal warning, students should evacuate the building as directed by campus police or critical incident response team (CIRT) members.
- Do not run.
- Do not use elevators.
- Leave the building as directed.
- Take personal belongings if they are in the same room
- Close all doors behind you.
- Do not lock doors.
- Report to designated evacuation staging areas.
Students and staff will be permitted to re-enter buildings when the administrator-in-charge or emergency evacuation coordinator gives an “all clear” signal.
SAFETY AND SECURITY OF CAMPUS FACILITIES
The facilities and grounds, of
Blinn College, are maintained for use by students, faculty and staff. The
landscaping and outdoor lighting on
the campus are designed for the safety and security of the campus population.
Their maintenance receives constant attention. The Blinn campus has an
open design and some facilities are open to the general public. Some
buildings are open evenings and weekends. To insure maximum safety under
such circumstances, the administration does the following:
•
Limits access to academic and administrative areas to students or employees.
•
Require keys to access many areas.
•
Limits classroom and laboratory attendance to individuals enrolled in the
courses that meet in those facilities.
•
Provides landscaping and outdoor lighting designed for safety.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. If any student identifies a
safety hazard, then it is his/her responsibility to report it immediately
to the appropriate administrator, faculty member or Emergency Management/Safety Coordinator at 979-830-4661.
CRIME AWARENESS AND PREVENTION
Students must assume responsibility for their personal safety, as well as their property.
Always be aware of your surroundings and travel with companions when possible. The BCPD regularly presents programs designed to provide information to students, staff and faculty. These programs include; crime prevention, awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, other forcible and non-forcible sex offenses and campus security procedures. In these programs is the message everyone should take responsibility for their own security. These programs are presented to residential students each semester. Any campus group or organization can request a program presentation. Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility. If you see criminal or suspicious activity, report it immediately.
